Winterizing your air cooled V.W. Before we know it that cold winter wind will be blowing and the layers of clothing will be brought out just so a comfortable ride can be taken in our air cooler. These vehicles are not known for keeping its occupants toasty warm so to get the most out of what you have do a little inspection of the system. First check the cables that lead back to the heater boxes. The lever on the passenger side of the parking brake handle on type 1, 3, and4 opens both heater boxes simultaneously. The other lever opens and closes the floor vents, which in turn directs the heat to the dash or at the floor. Next on the engine the air transfer tubes on each side of the fan shroud need to be securely in place and fitting snugly to heater box. If you are in doubt about all the components please come by the shop and we can show how it all goes together. The heater boxes themselves need to be checked to make sure there is no exhaust fumes leaking into the passageways. One of the most critical areas for this is the small pipe from the box to the muffler. The clamps there must be tight to make a good seal. The tin around the pipe should fit snug also. If you see holes in the boxes a quick fix would be wire brush the area to remove as much rust, oil and dirt as possible. Then clean the area with a solvent such as carburetor or brake clean to dissipate any oil residue. Dry well and apply aluminum tape. This can be obtained at a hardware store in the ducting department. Stay warm and enjoy. |
